David is now exhausted. He stands around, puffing and panting, looking this way, and that. Where to go next? The mist suddenly clears, and an apparition of his dead friend from the trenches, Charles, appears before him. David can hardly believe what he is seeing in front of his eyes. Charles is so real that David can almost reach out and touch him. Clear as day. But he knows Charles cannot possibly be real. David runs, at speed, in the opposite direction of the ghost … but deeper into the mist.
