14 Who is there?

Anna has a big woolly jumper on. She doses in her chair in front of the fire, and dreams of the past. Images of a young woman artist appear in these dreams. The lady artist has film-star beauty and she stands in front of an easel. She speaks to Anna. She is painting her portrait, with gusto.

There is no electrical power in the house. And so only candlelight. Anna awakes from her dozing. She hears a stirring and creaking sound. She gets up out of her chair and picks up a small torch.

“Hello?” She calls out into the pitch-black house, with wariness in her voice.

Anna hears a scraping or scratching sound coming from the door that leads to the cellar.
